As the leaves begin to change, millennial fashionistas are staunchly defending their love of denim jackets, a popular fashion statement since the 1950s.
When a woman on TikTok, who goes by Birdie, tried to suggest that her fellow millennials stop wearing blue denim jackets, begging them to “please shut them up,” many of her generation didn’t. strongly agreed.
TikTokker @starbirdb went viral with 1.3 million views when she tried to remind millennial women that they “have options” and said her generation should “pull off” their denim coats.
But the 30-year-old seems to have been left out in the cold with her opinion.
“The congregation has spoken collectively and said no! With much respect!!!” said the most liked comment.
Tens of thousands of people wrote in the comments to defend their beloved cover, insisting that blue denim jackets are a “classic”, “a timeless piece”, “a staple” and very “versatile”.
Jean jackets even got a special outpouring of love from some Canadians, who go even further than just jackets – a full denim look is called a Canadian tuxedo.
Up-to-date millennials also noted that other popular styles from their younger years — like peplum tops and ties — have made a resurgence, meaning even if they gave up denim, it’s just about to make a comeback with style.
“Don’t worry, in a few years Gen Z will claim jean jackets as the cool new trend,” one replied.
Eventually, @starbirdb admitted that most in her comments seemed to be on the same page – except for her.
“You really like your blue denim jacket,” Birdie admitted in a follow-up TikTok video.
Denim jackets have been a popular staple found in closets since the 1950s, and they won’t hang around if millennials have anything to do with it.
The unisex cover has recently been seen on a number of millennial icons and other designers, including Alicia Keys, Martha Stewart, Demi Lovato and Kristen Bell.
